As a Landscape Designer in Santa Clarita, I really enjoy designing with edibles, this didn't start when I became a Landscape Designer - it goes way back. Some of my fondest memories are of picking blueberries and cherries in my Grandmother's garden. Although she didn't have a lot of space, she always had a veggie garden (right next to the clothesline) about six or seven blueberry bushes, and a very big Queen Anne Cherry Tree.

All the grandkids would take turns picking those cherries. We had a tall ladder, a rope and a bucket. One of us would climb the ladder, sit on one of the conveniently located branches or branch crotches, pull the bucket up with the rope and fill the bucket. Then we would lower it down to the rest of the crew to sort (eat) and put into containers for the house. Repeating as necessary or until we got too full. The blueberries were easier as they were on ground level (hmmmm maybe that's why my brother always opted for the blueberries - though he won't eat them from the store as they are "inconsistent") We'd all swarm around the bushes with small containers eating more than we brought into the house for Grandma.

As you might understand it is difficult for me to get rid of a fruit tree, any kind of tree really, but sometimes you just have to do it. Or so I thought. I purchased an Oro Blanco Grapefruit and a Pink Lemonade Lemon tree from Papaya Tree Nursery about 14 years ago (geeze has it been that long?) That was before I became a landscape designer and probably when I was still sort of in an east coast planting state of mind. I figured if it is citrus it is going to grow in my California home - after all we aren't far from Fillmore, right? Well the Oro Blanco (which I placed right next to my living room window for the fragrance - between the house and a block wall for protection) has been a gem of a tree. It is lush, gorgeous, and produces THE BEST grapefruits I have ever had. My Pink Lemonade tree on the other hand has been a challenge.

I started out with the Pink Lemonade tree by the pool, after about six years of discolored leaves, fragrant blossoms but then fruit drop I decided to ask Alex from Papaya Tree what I was doing wrong. That is when I found out (why didn't his dad tell me years ago I'll never know) that if I planted this tree in SCV, it needed part shade (what a citrus tree that wants part shade?) So I moved it. I put it about 20' from the Oroblanco near another window, where it would receive some shade from surrounding trees. I added another bubbler to that irrigation valve, fertilized and waited. And waited, and waited, and waited. Every year I would say, "If this thing doesn't stop dropping all its fruit, I'm going to pull it out and put in a ... persimmon, jujube, (fill in the blank fruit) that I love."

So this past summer, we had a house fire (we're all okay) and were displaced from our home for three plus months. Needless to say, many of my plants suffered but overall nothing looked too bad for neglect, except the citrus trees on the side of the house. My kumquats (in pots by the pool) did just fine because I fertilized things when I could and watered fairly regularly (none of my citrus are on automatic water, I must hand water or turn the bubbler valve on - less water is better). Anyway, the firemen and builders threw crap out of the second story window and off the roof and unfortunately the Oro Blanco and Pink Lemonade were hit. The Pink Lemonade even took a direct hit, breaking off a branch or two. This is the year I thought, she'll never survive all this battery and neglect.

Well, (I'm sure you saw this coming) today I went out into the garden to take some #springtease photos and what did I find? My first ever full size lemon on my Pink Lemonade Tree! I guess my Last Chance Lemon thrives on neglect. I'll have to try to figure out what I can throw off the roof this summer, then maybe I'll get two lemons!

It is that time of the month again (or a little later) when being a Landscape Designer in Santa Clarita means I send you my list of chores for the month. Read through, select what you need to do and discard the rest. February is the reason that I moved to Southern California, we are the lucky ones working out in our garden while others are digging themselves out of the snow. (My family included)

Here is the link for your February To Do List, so enjoy the sun, the breezes, and yes... the chores - we're lucky to have them.

In addition to planning your veggies (#9) don't forget that it is a great time to plan some beautiful Container Designs, and you might even pick up some pottery on sale since the new shipments will be coming in to nurseries during this next four weeks.
I know as a Landscape Designer in Santa Clarita, California I'm supposed to be showing you How to Landscape your home, but if you have been following my blog at all you know that I can't resist a good "How Not To" post. Thursday morning I was walking my dogs and strayed off the paseos (which is my usual morning routine) and on to the streets near my home. Within half a block I was assaulted by one terrible pruning job after another. Most of the photos I'm going to share with you are from THE SAME BLOCK! Oy vey, I'm wondering if there is one Landscape Janitor that is doing all these houses. It isn't a gardener - that's for sure. A true gardener could NEVER do this to a friend (and all my plants are my friends).

Here we go, first here is a Lavender Box - if I told you that blossoms generally grow on the tips of the plant, how many lavender blossoms do you think this baby would have? Not many, and of course all on the top. Now, you say - don't the French trim lavender into hedges for parterres? Yes, you're be right about that but please, in what universe is one lonely plant a parterre?

The Rhaphiolepis Round About. This poor Indian Hawthorn was pruned to geometrically wind around the CATV box, really? Really? I think if I was going to do this I would have added a front piece so the neighbor could share in the joy of a hidden utility box. But of course, I'd never do this. I don't own a chainsaw or hedge clippers. If I can't do it with pruners, it doesn't get done. (Yes, I call an arborist to do my trees).

Fortnight Lily Fiasco: If you want a smaller plant, buy a smaller plant. You can't just make the plant the size you want it to be, unless of course you like this look. I for one do not. I only use Fortnight Lily Plants in places where they can grow to their full size, minimally 3' x 3', that doesn't sound big but it really is.

Flat Foliage or How wide is your hedge? This is completely ludicrous, two different plants that could successfully be used as screening or hedge plants - but pruned insanely. These two plants want to be at least 5' wide, maybe this is it's buzz cut for the year, but it looks very painful to me. Why does it need to look like this?

And the Icing on the Cake is: The top photo - the entree' for the blog post. I don't even know if I have words for this one. The best thing I can say is that this Landscape Janitor stuck to the Rule of Threes. What the heck is this supposed to be, and how can the homeowner walk out the door every morning?

Now, I have to admit I'm not a huge fan of hedges in general but I did find one planting that serves it's purpose as a hedge, has been pruned regularly, and although it may not be my style I thought I should show at least one successful attempt at pruning. I think they should have planted just one more plant, but then I guess they'd be blocking access to the hydrant. Funny look.

It's been very cold for Southern California, so of course we want to hibernate or curl up on the couch with a warm beverage - right? Wrong! Being a Landscape Designer in Santa Clarita, California I know that it is time to start planning a little "rose time".

We are getting close to rose pruning time for Southern California, Superbowl Sunday is the perfect time to prune your roses. If you have a landscape Janitor, I hope you can stop him from pruning early (some have already hacked things to bits) because they get slow in the winter and they still have to pay their crew so sometimes you can't stop them!

If they haven't pruned your roses yet, have a chat with them and seriously think about telling them NOT to prune at all. I'll give you simple instructions so that you can take care of them yourself! Just click on the Rose Pruning link and voila'! You can take care of them yourself when it is the CORRECT time to prune.

I also want to let you know that one of my favorite nurseries, Otto & Sons, in Fillmore, Ca. has Rose Care University so you can learn in person what to do. Tell Scott that I sent you!
An extra added bonus today, from 10am - 12pm they are having a class on Backyard Orchard Culture. I attended last year and it was great. Here is what I learned: Backyard Orchard Culture from the Master.
The $15 is a huge value, you receive a $10 gift certificate towards purchases and they have amazing roses and all their merchandise - last year I got $10 off of my Felco Pruners (the creme de la creme!) and you are entered to win great door prizes - roses, books, and more!

Being a Landscape Designer in the Santa Clarita Valley, I can tell you there is no rest for the wicked, even in January. There are plenty of Gardening Chores to do, and the weather (although a bit nippy for some) is perfect for a little strenuous activity.

Here is a link your January Chores... enjoy working on them as you remember our poor east coast friends, shoveling snow!
Gratitude is an important part of life and being a Landscape Designer in Santa Clarita I am grateful every day for my wonderful, creative, fun career.

Most importantly I am grateful to my clients. I have the best clients around, and I want to personally thank each and every one of you for allowing me into your home and into your backyard to collaborate with you to turn your yard into a garden. A beautiful sanctuary that is special for you and your family. I want to thank you for trusting me, and sharing with me because that is what makes my heart sing!

This year has been an "interesting" one for myself and my family, and if it wasn't for the support that I received from my fabulous clients and friends, it would have been a lot more challenging. That said, it was also a WONDERFUL year, filled with beauty, comfort, love, growth, creativity, truth, and more. I feel that having this kind of support in 2012, will allow us all to move forward into a better, brighter 2013. Helping one another will only lead to a more wonderful way of living, moving forward - that is what it is all about.

Being a landscape designer in Santa Clarita I think it is my sworn duty to remind you how to take care of your plants when it gets unseasonably cold, and if you are anything like me you have noticed that it is pretty chilly outside lately.

I wrote the original post in 2010 and I run it again and again each year to remind my clients and friends that it is time to winterize, that said there are a few more tips that you should know.

1. Although most plants will benefit from watering prior to the cold (as mentioned in the post), cactus and other succulents WILL NOT. If they have too much water they will burst and are better a little under watered.

2. Check your irrigation timer! If you have the time set for early early morning hours, now is the time to have the watering start after 8 am. I switched mine to 9 am. There are two reasons for this, if the plants are super cold and maybe even a little frosty the last thing you want to do is put water on them and thaw them quickly. Let the sun or air temperature do the job. And... if you water your landscape early in the morning you will create a pool of water that will quickly turn to ice. A huge slip hazard!

Here is the link to How To Prepare For Frost. Take a few moments to read through and get ready, you may need it more than once this year.

Happy Holidays, enjoy your time off, your friends, and your family. You deserve it!
Holidays can be a fun time, a joyful time, and a stressful time and being a Landscape Designer in Santa Clarita, California I am not immune to the holiday rush. There are a lot of commitments during the holidays, lots of shopping, cooking, and decorating to do so I wanted to drop you a line to remind you to stop and smell the roses.
Take a nature break, and fill a container with pretty plants that will make you smile and add cheer to your wintery days.

Spend a little time taking your four legged friends for a walk, or stroll the trails alone for a walking meditation. Look up at the sky, down at the ground, watch the leaves turning and falling, enjoy your life!

Being a Landscape Designer in Santa Clarita, I love using Achillea (Yarrow) in my designs so I thought I’d put together some tips for taking care of it after you have planted it in your garden. Here in Southern California the yarrow is still up and green, and may be much of the year depending on our weather.

Achillea is a drought tolerant, California native perennial that grows by rhizomes and is supposed to go deciduous in winter. Well, there is still time because technically it is not yet winter – but the yarrow I’ve seen lately shows no signs of deciduosity! (No probably not a word, just thought it was cool). Yarrow is hardy from zones 3-10, so it is a very versatile plant, and yes I’m sure it is deciduous by now in the lower numbered zones.

They have beautiful fern like foliage, and wide variety of colorful flower choices (white, yellow, pinks, reds, and even lavender) that rise above the foliage in flat-topped clusters of daisy shaped flowers. Achillea is deer resistant, so you aren’t planting salad for your buddies; however they do attract beneficials such as butterflies and bees. They are also are said to repel ants, flies, mosquitoes, and beetles, sounds like an almost perfectly balanced plant when it comes to insects.

They are great in a native California garden, drought tolerant bed, Cottage/Informal garden or even a rock garden, make a nice dried flower in an arrangement and they even make a lovely ground cover. Be careful about over watering, because they can take the water well, but become invasive.

Preferring fast draining soil and full to part shade, they are pretty low maintenance and very pest free. Achillea generally starts blooming in June, and if you deadhead regularly you should be able to keep them blooming right into the Fall (September for sure and maybe later). If you don’t deadhead through out flowering time be sure to dead head in the fall (September/October) so that they can get through the winter better.

They can be dug up and divided by pulling off the litte baby plantlets that you find. You can also plant any seeds you collect, but they will likely not be the same as your parent plants so instead of seed collecting why not find a friend with yarrow you love and do a little trading?

I love to plant my Achillea with Nepeta (Catmint) native salvias, sedums and even euphorbias. They look and play very well together.

So to wrap up I’ll tell you a little story, Achillea is named for the mythological Greek hero Achilles. In Homer’s Iliad his soldiers used achillea to treat their wounded comrades, this gave rise to Yarrow’s additional common names of Bloodwort or All Heal. (Sounds like a good reason to classify this as perfect for a Healing Garden)

Now I can't end this without a shout out to my favorite local Achillea grower, Worldwide Exotics Nursery in Lake View Terrace, California has a great selection of Yarrow and Sara Scissorhands takes great photos, so I had to steal one for this post. Visit them for a great selection of "torture friendly' plants.

As a Landscape Designer in Santa Clarita, I want to be sure that all my clients, friends, and fellow gardeners know the things to do out in the garden in December. I lived on the east coast for much of my life, and spent the month of December pouring over seed catalogs or enjoying the bare branches getting ready for snow. Now I am out in the dirt (and sometimes mud) and I'd love for you to join me! To that end, here is a list of gardening chores you might like to take care of in your garden this month.

If it is brisk outside, you know you've earned a nice warm cup of tea, coffee, or cocoa. Get out there and enjoy!

This is the week of Thanksgiving, and many people have turned toward thanking others, being grateful, and generally opening their hearts. Wouldn't it be wonderful if we did that every week of the year?

We can. By living your true passion you will naturally give back to the world, become more open, and your abundance will grow. My true passion is helping the world become a green place one garden at a time, and I feel so very lucky that I am able to do that every day with the most wonderful of friends and clients.

Today, I would like to thank you all for inviting me into your lives. I would like to encourage you all to find your true passion, and live it!
Please add your signature to our world, you can make it a better place.
